Police: Victim of Monday shooting in Greenwood has died

The victim of a Monday morning shooting in Greenwood has died, police said Tuesday.

Cecelia Cooper Laverne Babcock, 55, of Greenwood, was rushed to an Indianapolis hospital where she was first on life support Monday after she suffered a gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release from the Greenwood Police Department.

Greenwood detectives are working with the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office to charge Randy Sutt, 43, also of Greenwood, with murder, the news release said. Sutt was arrested Monday after a short standoff with police in which he and officers exchanged gunfire multiple times. He was also arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness for aggressive driving causing serious bodily injury, a Level 6 felony.

He was being held at the Johnson County jail on $43,300 bond Tuesday morning.

Police responded to a report of a person shot about 10:30 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of Legacy Blvd., in the Homecoming at University Park neighborhood, according to the initial news release from the Greenwood Police Department.

Police arrived and surrounded the house. Sutt came out of the house armed with a gun, according to the news release. He and officers exchanged gunfire before he went back inside. Sutt then pointed the gun at officers through a side window of the house, and officers fired at him again, the news release said.

No one was injured in either shootout, according to the news release. A negotiator with Greenwood police talked with Sutt on the phone and convinced him to disarm and surrender, police said.

Video of the arrest shows Sutt throw the gun out of the house, walk out, lay down in the front yard and put his hands over his head. Officers, one armed with a rifle, approached slowly and arrested Sutt.

Police then entered the house where they found Babcock upstairs with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital where she later died.

Sutt has a criminal history, including a conviction for theft of a firearm and carrying a handgun without a license in Marion County, according to online court records.
