Johnson County students awarded teaching scholarships

A handful of students who either live or go to school in Johnson County were among 200 statewide who received $7,500 per-year scholarships to earn their teaching licenses in college.

The six local students who received the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarships have committed to teaching in Indiana for at least five years after they graduate, as part of the stipulations of the scholarship, according to a news release from the Indiana House Republicans.

More than 350 students applied for the scholarship, and recipients were required to be in the top 20% of their graduating class or score in the top 20% on the ACT or SAT exams, according to the news release.

Area scholars include Ian Hickey of Franklin Community High School and Annabelle Hock, of Greenwood, who attends Perry Meridian High School, both of whom will attend Purdue University, according to the news release.

The other four scholars include Kayla Kovacs, a student at Greenwood Christian Academy who will study at Taylor University; Cash Nelson, a student at Franklin Community High School who will attend Marian University; Lauren Pendleton, an Indian Creek High School student who will attend Franklin College; and Abigail Schooler, who will attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis after graduating from Edinburgh Community High School, the news release said.

To keep their scholarships, the students will have to earn at least a 3.0 GPA and complete at least 30 credit-hours a year, Indiana Rep. Chris May, R-Bedford said in the news release.
