Man critical after car crashes, catches fire in White River Township

An Indianapolis man is hospitalized with life-threatening burns after a Monday morning car crash in White River Township.

The crash was reported at 4:51 a.m. after a witness saw the car in a ditch on State Road 37, between Stones Crossing Road and Olive Branch Road.

When first responders arrived, the car was on fire and Jesse A. Morris, 25, was trapped inside, Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

While the Bargersville and White River Township fire departments were en route, Johnson County deputies and Bargersville police officers attempted to put out the fire, but the flames were too strong, according to the accident report.

Morris was traveling southbound on State Road 37 on his way to work when he left the roadway, striking multiple trees before the car caught fire, according to a news release from the Bargersville Community Fire Department.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and pull Morris from the wreckage, the news release said.

Morris was transported to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment, Burgess said. He was unresponsive at the scene, and an initial examination suggested he received multiple third-degree burns, he said.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, Burgess said.
