COLUMBUS
Phyllis Ann Beaman Baker, 81, of Columbus, passed from this life at 3:45 p.m., Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Phyllis was born October 15, 1938, in Franklin, Indiana, the daughter of Herbert and Sophia Wirey Beaman. She married Jack Baker November 27, 1971.
She graduated from Franklin High School (Franklin, Indiana) in 1956 and from Franklin College in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, Kappa Delta Pi education honorary, and the Franklin College Choir. She received a Master of Science in Education from Indiana University and is a Life Member of the Indiana University Alumni Association.
She was an elementary teacher for 24 years, one year at Break-O-Day School in New Whiteland; one year at Edinburgh Middle School; and 22 years at Hope Elementary School. She was twice nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. She was a member of the Bartholomew County Retired Teachers Association and was a life member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Baker was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for many years and sang with the Diesel City Chapter of Sweet Adelines. She also enjoyed league bowling for several years.
Survivors include her husband, Jack; daughter, Debra (Kevin) Feathers of Fishers; step-son, Randy (Victoria) Baker; step-daughter, Deborah Engleking, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Stephanie (Casey) Gardner, Brandon Feathers; step-grandchildren, Mattison Baker, Brooke Baker, Tayler Baker; three step-great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn (Ercel) Kerner of Fort Wayne; brother, Marvin (Louise) Beaman of Franklin; five nephews; one brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Private family calling will be at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin with Rev. David Blystone officiating.
