Stanley Oren Montgomery Sr. passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at the age of 85 in his West Lafayette, Indiana home with his family by his side. Stanley was born on October 14, 1934 in Franklin, Indiana to the late Paul E. and Susie M. (Fields) Montgomery.

Stanley is survived by children Stanley Montgomery Jr. (Pam), Norma Eugena “Jeannie” Holland, Alisa Montgomery, Theresa St. Laurent (Clayton), and Donna Montgomery; 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and a significant number of nieces and nephews.

Stanley was preceded in passing by his wife, Theresa Marie (Burnette) Montgomery; son, Daniel F. Montgomery; grandson, Daniel Montgomery-Heady; siblings, Nina Wallace, Paul E. Montgomery, Jr., John N. Montgomery, Norma Jean Birdwell, Carol Ann Guidry, Ronald Montgomery, and Lillian Joyce Montgomery-Foultz.

Stanley was a 1953 graduate of Franklin Community High School, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, where he served during the years of 1953-1961 as a Combat Engineer during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Stanley also served in the United States Army Reserves from 1975-1994, retiring from the Armed Forces after dedicating 26 years of service.

During this time period, Stanley received numerous badges, medals, awards, and achievements while enlisted in the armed forces which included the Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

During his years in Indiana, Stanley worked for the Atterbury Job Corps Center where he worked with youth on skill development to obtain employment, and be successful citizens within the community. After leaving the Job Corps Center, Stanley enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves where he worked as a Recruiter. Stanley relocated to Elmira, New York continuing service with the U.S. Army Reserves as a non- commissioned officer, active, duty, where he was in charge of Staff Training.

When Stanley retired from the military, he started a maintenance business which he retired from in 2008.

With Stanley’s desire to work with youth, he coached baseball and football for all age groups for a number of years. It was important to Stanley that all young people were provided the opportunity to participate in an athletic organization. After relocating to Elmira, New York, Stanley continued coaching youth baseball and football leagues where he was viewed as a legend of the sport.

Stanley retired from coaching at the age of 72 where he then became a supporter in the stands. The impact Stanley had on both coaching and sports was not measured by wins or losses, but by the number of lives he positively impacted. Stanley’s devotion, authenticity, and gracefulness exemplify what it truly means to be a coach in both sport and life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an organization dear to Stanley’s heart, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, in honor of Stanley Montgomery, Sr.

Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
