Olis D. Popplewell, age 70, passed away Wednesday evening, June 24, 2020 at AMG Specialty Hospital in Greenfield. He was a resident of Trafalgar.

He was born August 12, 1949 in Russell Springs, Kentucky, to his parents, the late Ocus D. and Lillian Lois (Wilson) Popplewell. He was a 1967 graduate of Nineveh High School and went on to serve as a Specialist with the United States Army assigned to the 24th Evacuation Hospital Command during the Vietnam War.

Olis retired in 2011 as the owner and operator of Franklin Marble & Tile after 22 years of service. Prior to that, he was a member of the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Union in Indianapolis where he worked as a Tile Setter. Olis was also a member of the First Separate Baptist Church in Franklin.

He enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, playing golf and pickleball. Olis also enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his wife. He will be remembered for his pizza parties that he hosted using his outdoor brick oven and the joy he got from spending time with his grandchildren.

Olis was preceded in death on June 1, 2019 by his loving wife of 23 years, Janice M. (Skirvin) Popplewell, whom he married on December 23, 1995 in Franklin. He was also preceded in death by siblings, Karen Baird, Deborah Popplewell and Jonathan “J.D.” Popplewell.

Olis is survived by his siblings, Lillian Ann (David) Pogue of Nineveh, Mackel “Mack” (Carla) Popplewell of Trafalgar; stepchildren, Bernard Carl (Starla) Spalding of Petersburg, Denitra Ruth Simpkins of Washington, Trent David (Jordan) Spalding of Indianapolis, Brian (Rachel) Spalding of Evansville and Chris Spalding of Washington; and several grandchildren,

The Rev. John Perkins will conduct a funeral service at noon on Wednesday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood with military rites presented by the Greenwood and Whiteland Honor Guards and the United States Army.
