Beavins, Bunker win Age Group golf titles

Staff Reports

Johnson County golfers dominated the leaderboards at Indiana Golf Association amateur and junior events through all of June. So far, July isn’t looking much different.

Franklin residents Ellie Beavins and Ava Bunker finished off championship runs in their respective divisions at the IGA Age Group Championships, which concluded Thursday in French Lick.

Beavins, who enjoyed a one-stroke advantage in the 17-year-old girls division coming into the second and final round, stretched that lead out on a tough scoring day. She finished the tournament at 72-80—152, posting the low round on each day to win by three.

Bunker came into Thursday tied atop the age 12 girls leaderboard with fellow Franklin golfer Lexi Ray at 74, but she pulled away for a nine-stroke win after four straight birdies on the back nine helped her to a 2-under-par 70. Ray was second with a two-day total of 153.

Lexi Ray’s older sister, Ava, moved up to finish second in the 16-year-old girls field, finishing four shots back with an 81-80—161.

Other locals earning top-five finishes were Camille Short and Abigail Rich, who were third and fourth among 14-year-old girls at 174 and 177, respectively. Center Grove graduate Caleb Tidd was fifth in the 18-year-old boys division at 74-75—149.

Luke Beetz shot a 74 to finish at 156 and earn a share of sixth place in the 16-year-old boys group. Brady Schier (79-79—158) tied for seventh among 15-year-old boys. In the 15-year-old girls group, Sage Parsetich (83-83—166) was sixth, two spots ahead of Lanie DeHaven (94-83—177).
