2 injured in multi-truck collision in Bargersville

A Lowe’s truck collided with another commercial vehicle and a pickup truck Wednesday evening on State Road 144, near State Road 37 in Bargersville, after the driver fell asleep at the wheel, police say.

The driver, David Gonzalez, 31, of Martinsville, told Bargersville police he doesn’t remember anything leading up to the crash other than hitting the other commercial vehicle.

The driver of the second commercial vehicle, Rex Bussinger, 54, of Franklin, tried to avoid the collision by swerving as far as he could out of the way, according to a Bargersville Police Department accident report. Bussinger’s truck was still struck head on and forced off the road into a utility pole, the report said.

There was a secondary collision between Gonzalez’s truck and a pickup truck driven by Dakota Burton, 23, of Edinburgh, causing side-swipe damage, according to the report.

There were no serious injuries in the crash, but the accident was a close call, said Mike Pruitt, assistant chief of the Bargersville Community Fire Department. Gonzalez was transported to an area hospital with abrasions, while Bussinger was taken due to an arm injury, the report said.

“Both of them were very, very lucky. When you have two trucks like that get hit … it can be a serious crash. They are lucky to have made it out OK,” Pruitt said.

The road conditions at the time of the crash were dry despite storms that blew through the area earlier that day, according to the report. Shortly after the crash, a torrential downpour caused difficulties for first responders, he said.

The highway was closed for about four hours to clean up the scene and restore power, police said.
