Rowen, Shepherd contending at Indiana Open

Greenwood residents Ethan Shepherd and Sean Rowen each shot a 2-under-par 70 on Monday in the opening round of the Indiana Open at Rock Hollow Golf Club.

Those rounds put Shepherd and Rowen in a tie for 10th place in the 152-player field, four strokes behind leader Brad Gehl of Carmel. Eight golfers are tied for second at 69.

Other locals on the top half of the leaderboard after the first round include Zack Carrabine of Bargersville (72), Damon Dickey of Franklin (74) and Austin Crowder of Greenwood (75). They were followed by fellow county competitors Alex Heck (77), Luke DeHaven (79), Noah Gillard (82) and Jackson Williams (86).

Ray in top 10 at Girls State Junior

Franklin’s Ava Ray carded a 76 on Monday to land in 10th place after Monday’s first round at the IGA Girls State Junior, which is being played at Plum Creek.

Ray is three shots behind leaders Madison Dabagia, Angelica Pfefferkorn and Mallory Russell.

Three other Franklin golfers finished the day in the top 30: Liv Parramore (79), Ava Bunker (80) and Ellie Beavins (81). Also making the cut for today’s second round include Lauren Pagel (82), Lanie DeHaven (83), Lexi Ray (84), Abigail Rich (84), Meg Fosnot (84) and Sage Parsetich (89). Players will be placed in flights before Wednesday’s final round.

Greenwood residents Kathleen Ameis (92) and Lexi Stuart (101) missed the cut.

Soccer

Local clubs host fundraiser

The South Central Soccer Academy and St. Francis Soccer Club are hosting the inaugural Campbell Highland Grille TOPSoccer foot golf tournament.

The event is scheduled for July 24 at Walnut Ridge Golf Course in Greenwood. The cost is $60 per team, with four players per team. Start time is 10 a.m. for the U8, U10 and U12 divisions. High school and adult participants begin play at 2 p.m.
