The Johnson County unemployment rate continued to rebound from its 21st century high of 13.6 percent in April, decreasing slightly from May to June.
The county’s jobless rate shrank from 9.8 percent in May to 9.3 percent in June, although the rate is still more than three times greater than the 2.9 percent pre-lockdown rate the county saw in March. Out of 92 Indiana counties, just 30 counties had lower unemployment rates than Johnson County in June. The county’s jobless rate is also lower than the state’s rate of 11.2 percent.
Johnson County’s job statistics show a stark contrast to June a year ago, when just 2.8 percent of the county’s residents were unemployed.
Overall, slightly more than 76,400 Johnson County residents had jobs in June, compared to almost 7,900 members of the eligible workforce who did not.
The data comes from the monthly report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which tracks unemployment statistics.
Daviess County in southwestern Indiana had the lowest unemployment rate in June at 5.7 percent, while Orange County, just two counties east of Daviess County, had the highest rate, at 20.2 percent.
