Gillard cracks top 10 at Northern Am

A sparkling final-round 66 from Noah Gillard on Friday landed him a top-10 finish at the Northern Amateur in Chesterton.

Gillard was 3 under on each side of the course during his bogey-free round, which moved him all the way up to ninth place overall by day’s end. He finished the tournament with a three-day total of 211 (-5).

Former Center Grove teammate Ethan Shepherd turned in an even-par 72 on Friday to finish at 213, tied for 13th.

Also in the field were Alex Heck (228) and Luke DeHaven (232).

Shepherd falls in quarterfinal

Fourth-seeded Erica Shepherd was defeated by No. 5 seed Sophie Burks, 3 and 2, in a quarterfinal match at the Women’s Western Amateur on Friday morning in Frankfort, Illinois.

Shepherd, a Center Grove graduate now playing at Duke, won the first hole with a birdie before Burks rebounded to win the next two. The match was even through seven holes, but then Burks won on 8 and 9 to take the lead for good.
