Police: Greenwood man broke into trailer at Goodwill

Police arrested a Greenwood man who broke into a locked semi-truck trailer at the Goodwill Outlet Center, a loss prevention officer said.

Christopher T. Crist, 28, was arrested on a burglary charge, a Level 4 felony that could result in up to 12 years in prison and $10,000 in fines, after a loss prevention officer watched him break into the trailer which was parked at Goodwill in the 900 block of Emerson Avenue, Greenwood.

Police responded to a report of the burglary about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. A loss prevention officer, who was asked to sit on the roof of the Goodwill due to recent thefts, saw two men, including Crist, park at a neighboring business, turn their lights off, walk to the east side of the building and break into the trailer, which was locked, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The security officer told police he called 911 when he heard banging on the trailers, which police later discovered had been broken into and damaged, according to the report.

The security officer said he yelled at the two men and they fled on foot through a tree line to a nearby hotel, the report said.

Police searched the car the men arrived in and found Crist’s wallet with his ID inside, according to the report.

The officer was on his way to the hotel to determine if Crist was a guest when the officer spotted him. Crist jumped a fence into a nearby construction site, but the officer was able to stop him, the report said.

Crist told police he was at the Goodwill, but was digging through an on-site dumpster.

He was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held on $6,600 bond.
