State police investigate fatal crash on I-65 in Southport

State police are investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 65, just north of the county line.

Tyberious Freeman Garrett, a 22-year-old Indianapolis man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Police responded about 10 a.m. Tuesday to reports of a serious accident on southbound I-65, near the Southport Road interchange.

Police located a heavily damaged car with Garrett, the driver, entrapped inside. Garrett was unconscious and not breathing, according to the news release.

Bystanders tended to a female passenger who had suffered critical injuries. The passenger was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, police said.

Preliminary investigation on scene by state police revealed Garrett was driving south on I-65 when he lost control of his vehicle and slid sideways into the back of a trailer attached to a construction vehicle, according to the report. The construction vehicle was parked on the side of the road in a construction zone. There were no construction workers injured in this incident, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, but investigators believe unsafe speed contributed to the crash, according to the news release.

All southbound lanes of I-65 were closed until about 1:30 p.m. while the crash was investigated and wreckage was removed, police said.
