Local ballot nearly set for November election

With the concerns over the coronavirus still in place, the Johnson County Clerk’s office is preparing for a presidential election like no other before. One constant that remains is the tradition of setting the ballot, which is nearly done.

Non-partisan school board seats are still in the filing process, with applications due at noon Aug. 21. Each school board in the county has multiple seats up for grabs this year.

Seats on the ballot are: Center Grove School Board, two at-large; Clark-Pleasant School Board, one member Pleasant Township and one at-large; Edinburgh Community School, two at-large; Franklin School Board, two city of Franklin, one Franklin Township; Greenwood School Board, members from district one and district three; Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson Unified School Board, two at-large, one from Nineveh Township.

At-large seats are open to any person who lives in the school district, but certain seats are only open to people who reside in a specific place within the district. For example, the Pleasant Township seat on the Clark-Pleasant board is only open to residents of that township.

Only five candidates have filed to run so far for the 14 seats on the ballot: Christopher Zaborowsky for Greenwood District 3, Cathy Hamm and Ryan Blaker for Edinburgh at-large, Kristine Ott and Andrew Lamm for city of Franklin and Franklin Township seats, respectively, on Franklin School Board.

All partisan offices on the Johnson County ballot are set, from the presidential race all the way down to races for county offices.

This year’s ballot features hotly contested races at the national and state level, including races for president, governor and Congress.

However, there is only one local contested race: Johnson County Council. Amanda Stevenson-Holmes, who is running for an at-large seat on county council along with three Republicans, is the only Democrat on the ballot for a county office.
