New state database reveals previously unreported COVID-19 cases at local facilities

A new state database revealed previously unreported cases of COVID-19 at local long-term care facilities.

The Indiana State Health Department and Family and Social Services Agency this week released a long-awaited comprehensive database of COVID-19 cases at long-term care facilities throughout the state.

The dashboard includes new and cumulative data which will be updated weekly, said Dan Rusyniak, the family and social services agency’s medical director.

The data will be updated weekly to make sure there are no duplicated case reports, Rusyniak said. Since COVID-19 patients may be moved between facilities and staff may work at multiple facilities, the extra time is needed to ensure an accurate count, Rusyniak said.

The dashboard includes resident and staff cases. The state had not previously released any data on cases among staff.

The dashboard includes all facilities in the state, regardless of whether there has been cases or deaths. To preserve privacy, facilities with less than five cases or deaths, the dashboard does not report exact numbers, Rusyniak said.

Statewide, the database shows 6,664 long-term care residents have tested positive for COVID-19, and 1,753 have died.

In Johnson County, at least 272 cases have been reported among residents at 10 local long-term care facilities. Most of those cases were at three facilities that reported major outbreaks — Greenwood Healthcare Center reported 189 cases; Greenwood Meadows reported 111; and Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife reported 60.

At least 89 residents at eight local long-term care facilities have died as a result of the virus, making up about 75% of the county’s total coronavirus-related deaths to date. Greenwood Healthcare Center reported the most deaths, with 33.

At least 78 staff members at eight local long-term care facilities have tested positive for COVID-19. Otterbein reported the most cases among staff, with 35.

New cases will be added to the dashboard at noon on Wednesdays. The state health department is still updating case counts on its general coronavirus dashboard at noon each day. Both dashboards can be found at coronavirus.in.gov/.

The state is also considering releasing a database of COVID-19 cases at Indiana schools, said Kristina Box, state health commissioner. The Indiana State Board of Education is helping the health department compile school rosters for a more accurate count, she said.

For now, COVID-19 cases at local schools are being reported to parents and guardians via letters from administrators, and phone calls to families whose child may have been in close contact with an infected individual.
