Sheriff warns of scam, man posing as deputy

The sheriff is warning residents to be aware of a potential scam involving a man posing as someone from the sheriff’s office.

The scam is known to involve a man claiming to be from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office asking for donations or trying to ask for money for a warrant or other court-related issue, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

One number the scammer is known to call from is 317-668-1659, but the calls can come from other numbers too, according to the news release. They will ask for payments to be made through a credit card, gift card or Green Dot card.

The sheriff’s office reminds residents that it will never solicit money over the phone, and the only charities linked to the office are the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Charity Ride and fundraising by the Johnson County Fraternal Order of Police. Any court-related issues or warrant transactions are made through the mail or directly at the sheriff’s office, never over the phone, the news release said.
