Franklin man ‘extremely critical’ after motorcycle crash near Amity

A Franklin man was taken by LifeLine with serious injuries after a single-motorcycle crash late Friday morning in a construction zone near Amity.

About 11:53 a.m., the driver, Christopher C. Arthur, 28, turned from State Road 252 onto northbound U.S. 31, where he was driving in the left lane, which was closed for resurfacing, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses said Arthur, who was traveling at a high rate of speed, struck the lip of the asphalt from a section that had been cut down. The transition was about three inches tall, and caused him to lose control of his motorcycle, flip multiple times and crash, according to the report. He was thrown from the motorcycle, and found unconscious in the roadway. He was not wearing a helmet, the report said.

The driver’s wife, who was on her way to meet him, came upon the accident, chief deputy Andy Barnhart said.

He suffered from visible head injuries and severe bleeding, according to the report, and was taken by a LifeLine helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he is listed in critical condition.

He was “extremely critical,” Barnhart said.
