Indian Creek reports first positive case among students

A student at Indian Creek High School tested positive for COVID-19 Sunday, marking the first reported student case of the virus at Indian Creek schools.

The positive test was the first at the district since school started Aug. 5, although an Indian Creek High School football coach tested positive for the virus in July.

The student last attended school Aug. 18, and will have to quarantine for 10 days since the date of the positive test, meaning until Sept. 2. Students who were within six feet of the student with COVID-19 for at least 15 minutes will have to quarantine until Sept. 1, two weeks since the student was last in school. Although Indian Creek schools is following its reopening protocols, school administrators are prepared for future positive tests, Superintendent Tim Edsell said in an email to parents Monday.

“In response to COVID-19, we have made many adjustments to our school environment,” Edsell said. “Despite these efforts, we know that positive cases will arise. We will continue to follow our Safe Re-Entry Plan, and when we are notified of positive COVID-19 cases within the school system, we will work with the Johnson County Health Department to identify and inform those who have been in close contact for contact tracing.”

As of Monday, there have been 26 reported cases at 16 of the county’s 38 public schools.
