Greenwood girl wins national contest

A Greenwood girl was named the winner in her age group for a national contest.

Raegan Lawson won in the 12 to 14 age division in the “Military Kids Have Talent” virtual contest, which showcases the talents of children of military members. Lawson, who sang a rendition of Elizabeth Gillies’ song “Okay” was announced the winner of her age group after two weeks of voting.

The grand finale of the contest was hosted by actor Jocko Sims on the Facebook page of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which created the contest. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is an advocacy organization that focuses on the country’s military caregivers, including military members’ spouses, parents, family members and friends, according to a news release from the foundation.

It was important to keep the contest going, even in a virtual format, Elizabeth Dole Foundation CEO Steve Schwab said in the news release.

“We created this virtual opportunity because COVID-19 caused many celebrations and milestones to be canceled for military kids and we are delighted by the enthusiastic nationwide response and participation,” Schwab said. “We congratulate our five talented winners and thank Americans from coast to coast who supported the contestants with their votes.”
