DAR group honors Revolutionary War vet

<p>A Revolutionary War veteran buried in Johnson County was honored during a special ceremony on Sept. 5.</p><p>At the event, the Mary Bryan Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution in Greenwood unveiled newly fabricated ironwork for the headstone of Jeremiah Harrell. Harrell fought with the South Carolina Regiment in the Revolutionary War, and was involved in the battles of Sullivan’s Island and Briar Creek, as well as with the militia at King’s Mountain.</p><p>He later moved to Johnson County after the war, and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in White River Township in 1834.</p><p>Members of the Mary Bryan Chapter had discovered Harrell’s headstone while planning a veterans’ recognition event in October 2019. They arranged for a special ironwork adornment to go around Harrell’s grave and put together the ceremony in recognition.</p><p>In attendance during the ceremony were three of Harrell’s descendants, Sue Agan, a DAR member in Danville, and Betsy Hollingsworth and her son Peter from Carmel. A number of DAR officials were also present, including Indiana state regent Charlotte Blair, state treasurer Elaine Sholty, state organizing secretary Rhonda Beck and honorary state regent JoAn Nichols. Sixteen members of the Mary Bryant Chapter attended the event, as did representatives from VFW Post 5864 and VFW Post Auxiliary.</p>
