Katherine “Kitty” Fayerweather Giles Smith, 99 of Franklin, passed away on Sunday morning, October 11, 2020.

She was born on September 13, 1921 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia to Adah Elizabeth (Hatfield) Giles and DuBois Crispel Giles. Kitty married Stanton Wesley Smith on September 30, 1944. He preceded her in passing on December 10, 1968. She is survived by two sons, David Allan “Al” Smith (Susan Weaver) of Franklin and Phillip Giles Smith of Franklin. Also surviving are grandchildren, Angela Gallagher (Randy); Misty Albrecht (Pete); and Bart Smith (Jessica) and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in passing by her parents; husband, Stan and siblings, Richard “Dick”, Isabel, Barbara, Robert “Bud” and Mark.

She graduated from high school in South Pittsburg, Tennessee and attended Columbus Business College in Columbus, Indiana.

Kitty began musical training in high school, studying violin and voice. She later studied voice with Elma Ingelmann in Indianapolis.

She was employed by Noblitt Sparks in Columbus and later became Secretary to the Vice President at Arvin Industries, Harlan Stan. She also worked at the Johnson County Extension Office and Jim Williams Realty. Later she was employed by Tranter Industries as a Secretary and also worked for Grimmer Industries as a Secretary.

She was raised in the Episcopal Church. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Franklin where she served as an Elder and Deaconess and sang in the choir for many years. She was a Past President and former member of the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale and a Past President Emeritus of the Franklin Matinee Musicale. Kitty was a member of Phi Beta Psi Sorority and the Psi Iota Xi Sorority. She also was a member of the vocal groups, The Voices and Bel Cantos.

Rev. Bill Horner will conduct a graveside service on Wednesday, October 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, 100 S. State Street in Franklin, Indiana 46131. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Parks and Recreation, 396 Branigin Blvd., Franklin, Indiana 46131.
