Center Grove, Franklin advance in volleyball sectional

INDIANAPOLIS

The Class 4A volleyball sectional at Franklin Central features four teams that had winning records during the regular season, and all were on display Thursday night.

Franklin and Center Grove kept their momentum going, advancing to the semifinals with straight-set victories.

The Grizzly Cubs got things started with a 28-26, 25-22, 25-21 decision over Shelbyville, riding the 17 kills of senior outside hitter Cami Kelsay and nine from senior Megan Thompson. In the nightcap, Grace Boggess delivered 15 kills to lead the Trojans past Greenwood, 25-16, 25-11, 25-13.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery
Franklin (15-13) plays Whiteland (8-19) in the 11 a.m. first semifinal on Saturday, with the second pitting Center Grove (19-10) against the host Flashes (10-21).

The championship is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Franklin trailed in the first set, 19-13, but slowly chipped away, tying it at 21-21 on a kill from Lindsey Hughes and claiming the lead when the Golden Bears were long on a spike attempt.

Grizzly Cubs coach Jess Giles wasn’t happy with her team’s level of discipline at the outset, but liked the way it responded.

“When the defense is stopped, and when the blockers are loaded and ready to move is when you can make plays,” Giles said. “We talked as a team that this was their last chance to move on. I just wanted them to understand the severity of it if they don’t turn it on.

“And they definitely did. It’s a competitive group of girls. They understood the game we previously had with (Shelbyville), we played very, very well.”

Losing the first set would have perhaps given the Golden Bears the confidence needed to advance, but the Grizzly Cubs sidestepped any such possibility with their rally.

“Oh, it was great. Definitely a momentum carrier,” Kelsay said. “After that, we just had to keep the momentum up and not let down because they weren’t going to give up. We just had to play our game and keep fighting.”

Senior outside hitter Macey Kuhn led Shelbyville with 24 kills.

In the second match, the Woodmen led the first set early, but Center Grove charged back behind Boggess and junior Avery Holubar, who finished the match with seven kills and a service ace. Leading Greenwood were soph Mya Ayro with six kills and junior Jenna Armstrong with five.

The Trojans played without junior outside hitter Katie Egenolf, who has been sitting out since the county tournament and is questionable for Saturday, according to coach Chris Due. Egenolf’s absence on Thursday made it so that some of the Center Grove’s less experienced players could gain valuable postseason court time.

“We’re just kind of resting her right now. Taking it day by day,” Due said. “I thought everyone really stepped up tonight, especially it being a lot of the players’ first time competing in the postseason. I thought those players really looked comfortable on the court.

“They executed very well and looked like veterans on the court. We’ve been working hard this week in practice, trying some different things out. They were some of the best practices we’ve had all year, so it’s been very promising.”
