Man found dead at Edinburgh apartment fire

A man was found dead Saturday after an apartment fire in the 100 block of West Thompson Street in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh firefighters found an apartment building fully engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene at 4:07 a.m. Saturday, according to an Edinburgh Police Department news release.

Edinburgh Fire & Rescue, along with Amity, Franklin, German Township, Nineveh, Trafalgar fire departments worked together to extinguish the fire, the news release said.

The first and third apartments were occupied in the three-unit complex at the time of the fire, and the resident of the second unit was not home, according to the news release.

An individual in the first apartment was able to evacuate, but a man in the third unit was found dead, the news release said.

The man’s identity and cause of death are still under investigation by the Johnson County Coroner’s Office and Indiana Fire Marshall’s Office, according to the news release.

Edinburgh police, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office and the Bartholomew County Fire Investigator are assisting with the investigation, the news release said.
