Scouting Friday’s sectional football games

South Dearborn (4-4) at Greenwood (4-4)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Attendance: Contact the Greenwood athletic office at 317-889-4020 to see if any pre-sale tickets are still available. None will be sold at the gate.

Recent history: This will be the first time the schools have met since 2013, when the Woodmen earned a 48-32 sectional win.

Sagarin ratings: South Dearborn 48.94 (36th in Class 4A, 151st in Indiana), Greenwood 71.20 (11th in 4A, 55th overall)

Players to watch: South Dearborn — QB Logan Thies, RB C.J. Rogers, WR/DB Hunter Hatfield; Greenwood — QB/LB Gavin Ruppert, RB Noah Apgar, RB Ethan Haessig, DE Dylan Mayhew, DB Tanner Allen

What to look for: The Woodmen got an unplanned week off when their trip to Whiteland was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, so they should be rested and ready to go. The two-headed quarterback approach, rotating Ruppert in situationally for starter Luke Hommell, has proven quite effective, and Greenwood heads into the tournament playing its best ball. There will be some stiff challenges on the way through this sectional bracket, but the Knights don’t figure to be one of the tougher ones. As long as Mike Campbell’s team doesn’t get caught looking ahead to a potential rematch with Martinsville next week, it shouldn’t have much trouble tonight.

Roncalli (7-1) vs. Crispus Attucks (4-3)

At Northwest Middle School

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: roncallimedianetwork.com, CBS Sports 1430

Recent history: Roncalli cruised to a 45-14 sectional semifinal victory on the road last season.

Sagarin ratings: Roncalli 88.94 (second in 4A, 15th in Indiana), Crispus Attucks 32.19 (49th in 4A, 218th overall)

Players to watch: Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Baron Huebler, WR Kyle Lockard, DL Owen Volk, DB Dominic Brown; Crispus Attucks — QB Caleb Davenport, WR/DB Kemaany Hall

What to look for: Honestly? Probably a running clock. Roncalli was already heavily favored to repeat as the winner of this sectional before getting a very favorable draw. Attucks has had some nice performances this season, but those came against a far weaker schedule and are unlikely to be duplicated against a legitimate 4A state championship contender. Look for Roncalli to build a lead early and get its starters out of harm’s way as quickly as it can.

Class 3A

Indian Creek (6-3) at Tri-West (7-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: www.ISCsportsnetwork.com

Attendance: Capped at 170 on the visiting side; no cash tickets will be sold at the gate.

Recent history: Though there is a shared history on the sideline — current Mooresville coach Mike Gillin previously led both teams — the schools have not met on the field.

Sagarin ratings: Indian Creek 58.18 (16th in 3A, 111st in Indiana), Tri-West 71.89 (ninth in 3A, 52nd overall)

Players to watch: Indian Creek — QB Aidan Neathery, RB Connor Fruits, RB/DB Brandon Murray, WR/DB Jordan Gorham, OL/DL R.C. Hall; Tri-West — QB Kai Ross, RB Garrett Cora, WR Bryce Hendershot, WR Jace Mohr, LB Ethan Depinet

What to look for: The Braves’ defense faces another big challenge tonight against the Bruins, who not only have a rusher on the brink of 1,000 yards in Cora but also a dynamic and balanced passing attack. Hendershot (45 receptions) is the primary target, but four different players have at least 20 catches. Tri-West’s only two losses came to unbeaten Danville and by two points to Class 5A Plainfield. Indian Creek will need to control the clock with Fruits and the ground game and come up with some takeaways on defense to pull off the upset.

Covenant Christian (9-0) at Edinburgh (3-6)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: www.IndianaSRN.org

Attendance: Capped at 50 percent of capacity. Tickets are expected to be available at the gate.

Recent history: This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

Sagarin ratings: Covenant Christian 69.86 (third in Class A, 60th in Indiana), Edinburgh 7.86 (50th in A, 295th overall)

Players to watch: Covenant Christian — QB Austin Frazier, RB/LB Trey Flatt, WR/DB Brian Lomax, WR/DB Adrian Terry, LB Alex Coleman; Edinburgh — QB/DB Riley Palmeter, RB/LB Austin Streeval, WR/DB Caleb Dewey, WR/DB Landen Burton, DB Colin Richardson

What to look for: The Lancers won three games for the first time in four years, put up 40 or more points four times and built up some momentum for the future — but it will take nothing short of a miracle to get past the heavily favored Warriors tonight. The hope is that the dynamic duo of Palmeter and Dewey can work some magic, help put some points on the board early and make Covenant sweat a little bit, but Edinburgh will need to put together the game of a lifetime to even keep this competitive.
