State quarters suspended with Whiteland’s Gillespie up

INDIANAPOLIS

Whiteland boys tennis coach Mike Gillespie said his son has been in this position before — just not with this much on the line.

Quinten Gillespie, a senior with a 26-2 record, had his state quarterfinal match halted due to lightning the first set at North Central on Friday afternoon. Rain followed shortly.

Gillespie was leading South Bend St. Joseph junior Daniel Pries 4-2. The seventh game was tied at deuce on Gillespie’s serve. The match will pick back up at that juncture at 10 a.m. today, with semifinals set for 2 p.m. The championships for singles and doubles are now set for 3 p.m. Monday.

In past years, the match would go indoors, but IHSAA officials said before the match began they wanted to stay outdoors so fans could watch. With COVID-19 restrictions, few if any fans would be allowed access to the indoor courts.

“We’ve been here before as far as having a match delayed, obviously not in the state finals,” Mike Gillespie said. “But he’s had matches delayed from one day to the next. He’ll be fine. We’ll come out and battle again tomorrow.”
