Bertha Faye (Wilcher) Payton, age 98, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, October 29, 2020 at Franklin Meadows Assisted Living Community. She was a resident of Morgantown.

Bertha was born on October 15, 1922, in Liberty, Kentucky, to the late Claude and Zora (Turpin) Wilcher. She married James B. Payton on June 9, 1942 in Liberty. He preceded her in death on August 27, 1992 after 50 devoted years of marriage.

Bertha was a loving wife and homemaker. She worked in the Dietary Department at Morgan Hospital in Martinsville from 1959 to 1969 and went on to retire in 1979 from Diamond Chain in Indianapolis after ten years of service.

She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Trafalgar, where Bertha enjoyed working with children during Bible School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking for her family.

Bertha is survived by her daughters, Norma L. (David) Hamilton of Hartford City & Donna (James) Price of Morgantown; grandchildren, Tracy Price, James Price III, Brian Price, Kimberly Flaggs, Dawn Goodspeed, Robin Mills and Francis Freatherine; 13 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by daughters, Shelia Toon and Peggy Jean Tibbetts; son, James Payton Jr.; siblings, Nona Sawyer, Lula Vanoy, Mayme Randolph, Ollie King, Earl, Carl, George, Raymond and Kenny Wilcher.

The Rev. David Hamilton will conduct a funeral service on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
