Senate District 36 race still undecided

The incumbent in Indiana’s Senate District 36 overwhelmingly won over Johnson County voters on Tuesday.

But until votes from Marion County are finalized, the race between Republican Jack Sandlin and Democrat Ashley Eason will remain undecided.

Sandlin took 66% of the votes in Johnson County, compared to 34% for Eason. District 36 represents a portion of White River Township in Johnson County, and parts of Perry and Center Townships in Indianapolis.

In Marion County, teams of election officials started processing early ballots by 10 a.m. Tuesday. Officials said that by roughly 5 p.m., they had counted about 57,000 of the 213,612 votes cast early by mail and in person.

And officials had said key races were not expected to be decided on Election Night.

Throughout his campaign, Sandlin pointed to his experience in multiple levels of local government and his achievements so far in the state legislature as his defining qualities. The Indianapolis resident is a former Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigator who founded his own fraud investigation business.

In the past, he served two terms as a Perry Township trustee, as well as six years on the Indianapolis City-Council Council. His experience at various levels of government gave him a unique and valuable perspective, he said previously.
