GREENWOOD, IN

Edward Ray Harris 90 of Greenwood, IN left this earth after a well-lived life on Monday November 23, 2020 surrounded by his family at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis.

Ed was born on May 14, 1930 to Everett T. and Ruth (Batchelor) Harris in Orange County, IN. Raised on a farm, he loved the country life and aspired to become a large animal veterinarian at Purdue University. Service to his family and his country would change those plans.

He married the love of his life, Martha J. (Roberts) Harris on January 11, 1952 in Orange County, IN, she preceded him in death on September 6, 2000. In November of 1952 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

After service, he started working for the Ford Motor Company, where he worked until his retirement after 42 years.

He dedicated 56 years of service to Little League Baseball, first as an umpire and coach with Greenwood Little League then as the District 12 Administrator for over over 40 years.

Besides Little League and being an avid sport spectator, what he cared most for was his family. Ed (known as Ray to his family) and Martha raised four children, David Harris of Greenwood, IN, Rhea (Doug) Bohall of Greenwood, IN, Jeff (Lisa) Harris of Lexington, KY and Julie (Greg) Turley of Greenwood, IN. They gave their children a love of traveling on vacations throughout the country and an enduring sense of family. Sadly he lost his best friend Martha on September 6, 2000.

He was blessed to reconnect with and old friend and found the second love of his life, Patricia Kimble. They were married on March 2, 2002 and Ed gained four bonus children and always considered then that he had eight children: Kim Kimble of Greenwood, IN, Scott (Kim) Kimble of Joshua, TX, Julie (David) Werline of Orleans, IN and Chuck (Donna) Kimble of Paoli, IN. They shared 17 wonderful years together before he lost his second chance at love Patty on April 2, 2019.

Ed had a loving large extended family and one of his greatest joys was being in their company. He had 21 grandchildren/bonus grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, Nikki, Ryan, Lauren, Brian, Brad, Eric, Andrew, Daniel, Hannah, Lissi, Abbie, Samantha, Dinah, Heidi, Erin, Katie, Will, Shane and Lindsay. He had 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Ed was a well loved man and his family knew they were well-loved by this wonderful man.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and his siblings, Dorothy Robinson, Grace Grubb, and Eugene Harris.
