Edinburgh girls basketball returns with win

HOPE

An Edinburgh girls basketball team that had been in quarantine for two weeks certainly did not show any rust from the layoff when it returned to the court Tuesday night.

The Lancers were efficient at both ends of the floor in a 63-51 win at Hauser in their Mid-Hoosier Conference opener.

"After our break, it was really nice," said sophomore Gracie Crawhorn, who led the Lancers with 16 points. "I think we played good as a team. We set up the plays and got good passes and good shots."

Edinburgh (3-2, 1-0) was playing for the first time since Dec. 1 after a player had tested positive for COVID-19. The Lancers returned to practice on Monday.

"We definitely could have worked on some things on offensive movement, but for not practicing for a while, I think we did pretty well," Edinburgh coach Amy Schilling said. "I was pretty proud of us at the end of the game, taking control and using the clock. We have some players that are taking different roles, and I thought they were very smart."

The Lancers led 19-15 early in the second quarter when they went on an 11-1 run to take a 30-16 lead with 2 1/2 minutes left in the first half. They led 34-21 at halftime and went up by 15 after scoring the first basket of the second half, only to see the Jets (4-5, 0-2) rally to within 40-35 late in the third quarter.

Hauser got to within six twice in the fourth quarter, but Edinburgh was able to hang on for the win.

"We didn’t play very good the first half at all," Hauser coach Chad Evans said. "We weren’t playing our game. We were letting them dictate how we play. We got within five, and then it was just kind of like we just had a couple turnovers, a couple mental mistakes on defense and they just went on a little blitz."

Annelise Lollar scored 12 of her 15 points in the second half for the Lancers. Callie Hancock had 13 points, Alyssa Funkhouser added 10 points and Bethany Burton chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds.

"That’s what it’s going to take this year because we’re losing two scorers that averaged quite a bit," Schilling said. "For us to compete in conference, it’s going to take more than just one or two to score."

Funkhouser and Hancock were instrumental in holding Hauser’s Kyliegh Parrott, who had scored 29 and 25 points in her two previous games, without a field goal through three quarters. Parrott finished with eight points.

"I thought we did a good job holding Parrott," Schilling said. "That was one of our keys for the game. Some other ones got some points, but she’s definitely their key. Those two (Funkhouser and Hancock) are two of my defensive key players. Funk got in foul trouble there in the first, and I thought Callie did a good job stepping up and guarding her in the second."

Hannah Taylor led the Jets with 16 points.
