Stolen car with Christmas plate found in Edinburgh

Police came across a stolen car Thursday evening in Edinburgh.

Paul Dewayne Amburgey, 49, of Indianapolis, was arrested on charges of auto theft, possession of a narcotic, false informing and operating a motor vehicle without ever obtaining a license. Amburgey was also arrested on an outstanding Marion County warrant.

Randella Hill, 42, of Edinburgh, was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and paraphernalia.

A white Cadillac with a plate that included the letters "X MAS" was spotted leaving a house in the 800 block of Thompson Street. Doyne Little, Edinburgh police chief, was investigating an unrelated complaint in the area, he said.

Little decided to run the plate and discovered the car was reported stolen Wednesday from the Beech Grove area. When the car left the house, Amburgey appeared to be using evasive maneuvers to avoid attracting Little’s attention, he said.

“That was one of those plates that I was like ‘really,’” Little said. “(When they left), I could tell they were trying to avoid me. They were making a lot of quick turns.”

Little stopped the car a short distance away, at Circle K, 200 E. Main Cross Street. Both the driver and passenger exited the vehicle and were apprehended without incident, he said.

A search of Amburgey and Hill as well as the vehicle uncovered narcotics and paraphernalia.

The car will be reunited with its Christmas-loving owner just in time for the holiday.

“I swiped the car away from the Grinch who stole Christmas,” Little said.
