Two dead in Christmas Eve shooting near Bargersville

UPDATED 8:30 A.M. FRIDAY:

A minor and a 20-year-old are dead and a teen is recovering after a shooting Christmas Eve at the Circle K on Johnson County’s western border.

Bargersville Police and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for shots fired at 5:08 a.m. at 9400 W SR 144, Martinsville. Though the gas station has a Martinsville address it is in Bargersville’s police jurisdiction, said Jeremy Roll, spokesperson for the police department.

At the scene, Bargersville police found two men dead and another injured on the northside of the gas station parking lot, Roll said.

Ethan Bell, 20, of Indianapolis, was killed in the shooting, Roll said. The other decedent is a 17-year-old boy whose name is being withheld due to his age and unconfirmed status of his identity, he said.

The shooting survivor Devon McHugh, 18, of Martinsville, is recovering after he was transported to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis for emergency surgery.

McHugh is the only witness to the crime. No one heard or saw the shots fired, Roll said.

A customer reported the crime scene to the gas station clerk, he said.

The investigation is ongoing, but police on Thursday night named a person of interest. Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Levi Bradley Camplin, 18.

Camplin is approximately 5’06” and 180 lbs, with brown hair and brown eyes. The public is asked to call Bargersville Police at 317-736-5155 with information about the incident or Camplin, and advise individuals not to approach Camplin.

Bargersville hasn’t seen a homicide in recent memory. A crime like this, especially on Christmas Eve, is hard to see, Roll said.

“We aren’t too happy about this type of crime being in Bargersville,” Roll said. “But this is off of two different highways, so we have a lot of different transient individuals. This is the type of thing we don’t typically see here.”
