Indiana Attorney General-elect Todd Rokita has named Inspector General Lori Torres as chief deputy attorney general and chief of staff.
Torres was appointed to serve as inspector general in 2017 by Gov. Eric Holcomb.
Her office led an investigation into outgoing Attorney General Curtis Hill in 2018 after Hill was accused of drunkenly groping several women, including a state lawmaker. The inspector general’s report cited eyewitnesses who called Hill’s behavior inappropriate and “creepy” but said that he didn’t break any state ethics rules.
Torres also investigated potential wrongdoing within the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs and concluded there was mismanagement at the state agency but insufficient evidence for criminal or ethics charges.
Prior to serving as inspector general, Torres was commissioner of the Indiana Department of Labor under former Gov. Mitch Daniels and general counsel and deputy commissioner for the Indiana Department of Transportation from 2014-2017.
Torres, a Johnson County resident, earned her law degree from the IU McKinney School of Law.
“She is a skilled lawyer of the highest integrity and exactly the type of leader we need to take action for the citizens of our great state on day one,” Rokita said in a written statement.
