Woman injured in crash off interstate ramp

A North Vernon woman is in serious condition after she was in an accident at the Interstate 65 exit ramp in Franklin early Wednesday morning.

The woman was turning left onto State Road 44 from the I-65 northbound off-ramp, when an SUV traveling eastbound on State Road 44 collided with her car, striking the driver’s side door, said Matt Culp, chief of the Franklin Fire Department, which responded at the scene just before 7:30 a.m.

Indiana State Police and the Franklin Police Department also responded to the accident with the fire department. The woman was trapped in her car when first responders arrived, and firefighters had to cut the front driver’s side door off to get her out, Culp said.

Her worst injuries were fractures located in the abdomen area, according to the Franklin Police report. She was responsive to medics at the scene, but said she could not remember what happened, the report said.

She was transported by ambulance IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she remains in stable but serious condition.

The other driver involved did not require medical assistance, Culp said.

Accidents at the interstate ramps and State Road 44 happen more often than public safety officials would like, Culp said. There are no traffic lights at either ramp exit, just stop signs, so driver’s don’t always watch for oncoming traffic, he said.

“It’s a lot of times people are just impatient at getting off the interstate and just making sure they have plenty of space,” Culp said.
