Victim identified in fatal pond accident

A Greenwood man died this weekend after his car crashed into a retention pond.

Police identified the victim as 73-year-old Norman L. Helmke, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

Multiple crews responded to a report of a car in a pond about 3:20 p.m. Saturday, near State Road 135 and Main Street in Greenwood, said Jeremy Pell, chief of the White River Township Fire Department.

Witnesses told police Helmke was traveling west on Main Street, east of State Road 135, when the Honda Pilot he was driving suddenly veered off the right side of the road, down the ditch, across the sidewalk and into the pond. He was not speeding, and he did not brake prior to crashing into the pond, the accident report says.

The first crew on scene, as well as witnesses, attempted to rescue the driver, but were unsuccessful. An Indianapolis Fire Department dive team arrived about 3:30 p.m. and pulled the man from the water within two minutes, according to the department. He was taken to an area hospital where he died, Pell said.

Fire crews were assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Greenwood Police Department, which is leading the investigation.
