Whiteland rezones nearly 130 acres for warehouses

More warehouses are in Whiteland’s future.

The Whiteland Town Council last week agreed to rezone about 130 acres of farmland for industrial use.

Core5 Industrial Partners, an Atlanta, Georgia-based developer, requested 129 acres of farmland at 2500 Paul Hand Blvd. in Whiteland be rezoned for future industrial development.

The town council unanimously approved the rezoning. The property will add to a recent boom of industrial development in the area, west of Interstate 65 and east of Graham Road, directly south of the Whiteland Exchange Business Park.

The property will be used to build speculative warehouses that can be rented out later. There are no plans yet about how many or how big the warehouses will be, nor what types of businesses will occupy the spaces.

But Core5 shares the town’s vision, said Norm Gabehart, former Whiteland town manager. Rezoning that section of farmland for industrial use is part of Whiteland’s comprehensive plan. But the town wanted to find a solid developer before moving forward, and Core5 is that developer, Gabehart said during the council meeting.

"We met with them (Core5), and that gave us the opportunity to sit down with them and show them what our intent was and what our thoughts were about transportation, infrastructure and so-on," Gabehart said. "That gives us a better position to talk about those conversations because they haven’t gotten the zoning yet."
