College notebook: Jackson earns HCAC honors

Franklin College sophomore Faith Jackson was honored as Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference diver of the week for the fifth time in her career after winning the 1-meter event against Centre with 240.70 points. Jackson, a Greenwood graduate, also won the three-meter event with 226.35 points.

GREENWOOD

Anderson University freshman Gavin Dowling had 11 points, five rebounds and a steal as the men’s basketball team won at Manchester, 93-89. The Ravens then prevailed at home against the Spartans, 92-84, with Dowling chipping in six points, five boards and three assists.

St. Francis forward Jeffrey Reynolds helped the Cougars down Goshen, 100-85, with nine points, nine rebounds and four assists. He had 12 points and six rebounds in the Cougars’ 71-67 loss to Taylor.

Denver sophomore Eric Moenkhaus scored 10 points in the Pioneers’ 70-58 loss at North Dakota State.

Sophomore hurdler Nick Patton placed second for Franklin College in the 60-meter event in 9.06 seconds at the Friday Night Spikes event in Terre Haute.

INDIAN CREEK

Jared DeHart scored 10 points, dished out six assists and grabbed two rebounds for Bethel in a 112-94 triumph over Cornerstone. Bethel’s 110-98 loss at Huntington saw DeHart score 11 points, grab six rebounds and dish out two assists.

Junior guard Addie Rund had seven points and a steal for the Franklin College women’s basketball team in a 61-47 home win over Defiance. In the rematch a day later, she had four points and four assists in the Grizzlies’ 69-62 road victory.

WHITELAND

Franklin College sophomore Carter Crowe had five points, one rebound and an assist to the Grizzlies’ 88-65 win at Defiance. He contributed two boards at home as FC downed the same squad, 86-77, a day later.

FRANKLIN

Marian sprinter Sam Barnett took second in the 400-meter dash at the Greyhound Invitational, an indoor track and field meet at University of Indianapolis. His time was 54.43 seconds. UIndy runner Andrew Bixler placed 10th in the 3,000-meter run in 9:02.34.

Freshman Drew Hargis placed third in the 800-meter run for Franklin College in 2:08.61 at the Friday Night Spikes event in Terre Haute.

Carla Gildersleeve won the 200-yard butterfly for the 12th-ranked Indiana women’s swim team in 2:01.50 in a 166-134 home defeat of No. 14 Ohio State.

Bayleigh Torrance finished with eight points and four rebounds off the bench for Franklin College in a 61-47 victory over Defiance. The sophomore had 15 points and four boards in a reserve role as the Grizzlies downed Defiance on the road, 69-62.

The Franklin College volleyball team opened the season with a pair of losses to Mount St. Joseph, with Grizzlies senior Abby Sewell picking up six kills in the first match.

Lipscomb moved to 2-0 in women’s volleyball by downing Middle Tennessee, 3-1, with redshirt freshman setter Brooke Phillips totaling six assists for the Bison.

CENTER GROVE

The Indiana State women’s volleyball team opened its season with a three-set loss to Evansville. Freshman defensive specialist Ashley Eck had 11 digs for the Sycamores.

Louisville freshman sprinter Kiyah Yeast was runner-up in the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 24.55 seconds at the Hokie indoor track and field invitational at Virginia Tech. Yeast took ninth in the 300-meter dash in 40.10 seconds.

UIndy senior pole vaulter Kylie Falcone cleared 3.36 meters to place second at the team’s own Greyhound Invitational indoor meet.

Indiana Christian Goines set a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15 seconds. He later clocked an 8.17 to take second at IU’s own Gladstein Invitational.

NAIA No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan got nine points, four rebounds and assist off the bench from sophomore guard Spencer Piercefield in its 89-82 victory at Marian. Piercefield had three points, three rebounds and two steals in the Wildcats’ 83-70 win at Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Sophomore Trayce Jackson-Davis had 13 points, seven boards and two blocks in Indiana’s 74-70 loss to visiting Rutgers.

UIndy guard Ben Nicoson contributed a rebound and assist in the Greyhounds’ 78-68 win at Lewis.

Findlay senior guard Allison Utterback finished with four points and four assists in the Oilers’ 79-73 loss at Trevecca Nazarene. She knocked down six 3-pointers on her way to 20 points in Findlay’s 94-63 defeat of Ohio Valley.

Gleason Mappes lost a 3-2 decision at 197 pounds for the UIndy wrestling squad in a 20-11 loss to McKendree.

GREENWOOD CHRISTIAN

Taylor guard Kegan Owen had eight points, three steals and three assists in an 80-70 win over Huntington and three points and an assist in the team’s 71-67 defeat of St. Francis.
