College notebook: Denver’s Carrabine starts strong

The Denver women’s volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 sweep of Omaha as senior Macy Carrabine had 12 digs, four assists and two service aces. The former Center Grove player followed with 19 digs, two assists and an ace in a four-set loss to Omaha.

CENTER GROVE

Indiana Wesleyan downed St. Francis in men’s basketball, 100-83, with Wildcats guard Spencer Piercefield supplying the winners six points, three assists and two steals.

Trayce Jackson-Davis led Indiana with 19 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks in a 75-71 overtime loss to Illinois.

Findlay women’s basketball downed Lake Erie, 95-61, as senior guard Allison Utterback knocked down five 3-pointers on her way to 20 points for the Oilers. She also scored 12 in a 88-62 victory at Lake Erie.

University of Indianapolis junior Gleason Mappes won his wrestling match at 174 pounds by a 6-2 score in the Division II No. 7 Greyhounds’ 44-3 win over Davenport.

UIndy volleyball player Emma Jones had eight kills, two blocks and two digs in the team’s 3-0 loss to Lewis.

Indiana State volleyball downed Evansville in four sets with freshman defensive specialist Ashley Eck producing 12 digs, an assist and service ace.

GREENWOOD

Manchester freshman volleyball player Joy Maze had five kills and 22 digs in the team’s 3-0 loss to Franklin College. Maze had two kills and two digs in the second game against the Grizzlies, also a 3-0 setback.

Sophomore Nick Patton took part in the victorious 4×200 relay for Franklin College in a track meet against Earlham and host DePauw. Patton also won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.12 seconds.

Indiana sophomore wrestler Nick Willham won his match, 10-3, at 197 pounds in the team’s 24-15 loss to third-ranked Penn State. Willham then lost, 10-2, against his opponent from Northwestern, though the Hoosiers won as a team, 18-16.

Franklin College diver Faith Jackson won both diving events in the Grizzlies’ win at Transylvania, scoring 246.90 points on the 1-meter board and 188.18 on the 3-meter.

Anderson men’s basketball lost at Defiance, 87-71, as Ravens freshman forward Gavin Dowling scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two assists.

St. Francis forward Jeffrey Reynolds had two rebounds in a 100-83 loss against NAIA No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan. Reynolds helped his squad defeat Grace, 83-79, with 13 points, five boards and two assists.

INDIAN CREEK

Freshman swimmer Clay Key helped the Franklin College men’s team win at Transylvania by taking part in the first-place 200 freestyle relay.

Bethel guard Jared DeHart tallied 11 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists in the team’s 102-89 loss at Grace College. DeHart had 10 points, six assists and three rebounds in the Pilots’ 77-71 loss to Marian.

Franklin College guard Addie Rund had two points and an assist in the Grizzlies’ 68-60 loss to Hanover.

WHITELAND

Senior Sidney Crowe scored 13 points for the St. Francis women’s basketball team in a 68-61 loss to Indiana Wesleyan. She had eight points and a steal as the Cougars won at Grace College, 57-45.

Sophomore forward Carter Crowe contributed two points and two rebounds to Franklin College’s 74-62 win over Hanover in men’s basketball.

Franklin College guard Libby Baker had two points and a rebound in the women’s basketball team’s 68-60 loss to Hanover.

FRANKLIN

Sophomore swimmer Shane O’Sullivan helped the Franklin College men’s squad win at Transylvania as part of the victorious 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. O’Sullivan also won the 50 freestyle in 22.20 seconds. Grizzlies teammate Gauge Creech won the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions with respective scores of 278.25 and 262.50 points.

Bayleigh Torrance came off the bench to score four points, with four boards and an assist for Franklin College as it fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 68-60 loss to Hanover.

Senior Abby Sewell finished with six hills and three digs to help Franklin College volleyball defeat Anderson in four sets. The Grizzlies then lost in five sets to the Ravens, with Sewell totaling 11 kills and two digs. Franklin College then won a pair of 3-0 matches at Manchester, with Sewell producing nine kills in each of the wins.

Lipscomb setter Brooke Phillips had three assists and two digs in the volleyball team’s loss in three sets at UAB.

Freshman Drew Hargis placed sixth in the mile run for Franklin College men’s track in a meet against Earlham and host DePauw. Grizzlies teammate Eli Cochrane finished sixth in the 800 and helped the 4×400 relay place second.
