Dogtopia coming to Greenwood

Greenwood residents will soon have another place to send their furry friends for daycare or grooming.

Dogtopia, a national dog daycare, kennel and grooming chain with 144 locations across the country, will open a new location in Greenwood, at 1709 S. State Road 135.

The Greenwood location will be the company’s second in Indiana, the first being on the north side of Indianapolis. It will join a number of boarding options and dog daycares already in the city, including PetSuites, Dogtropolis and T and T Pet Resort.

There is no set opening date yet. Dogtopia recently requested a couple zoning variances from the Greenwood Board of Zoning Appeals before it could move in.

The building was leased previously to Honey Grove Educational Center daycare, which closed last year, and the property had sat empty since, according to city documents.

The property is zoned by the city as commercial small, which allows for dog grooming, but not boarding. To board pets, the property must be zoned industrial. Dogtopia requested a zoning variance to allow for boarding and grooming in a commercial space, arguing the property is difficult to develop since it is surrounded by a cemetery, so a dog daycare is the best use for the space.

Dogtopia also requested a variance to build eight-foot vinyl fences outside. The city’s zoning code limits fences to six feet. The board of zoning appeals approved both variances.
