Few accidents reported as road conditions improve

Public safety officials said Tuesday afternoon roads have improved after as much as 10 inches of snow fell across the county.

Still, they urged drivers to remain cautious.

In Greenwood, police did not have to respond to many accidents, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief of the Greenwood Police Department.

“Yes, we’ve had a few accidents, obviously. It’s not near as many as we anticipated,” Fillenwarth said.

The Bargersville Community Fire Department was not called to any accidents on Monday or by about 3 p.m. Tuesday, said Mike Pruitt, deputy fire chief. The department’s ambulance — led by a snow plow — responded to three minor medical runs overnight Monday, he said.

Pruitt said Tuesday afternoon road conditions are improving, but warned potentially hazardous conditions could linger for days.

“There’s going to be slicks spots as the snow melts and freezes … you might be driving across dry pavement one minute, and then find yourself dealing with anything from just regular melted snow to black ice,” Pruitt said.

The county returned to an orange travel watch Tuesday afternoon after a brief stint under a red travel warning Tuesday morning.

During a “watch,” only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies and other organizations, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
