Betty Smith

NEW WHITELAND

Betty Smith, age 81, got her wings and went to sing with the angels on February 14th, 2020. She was born June 22nd, 1939 in Beverly, Kentucky to Claudie and Susie Brock. She married her first love, Donald Smith (Sr.) who preceded her in death in 1992. They moved to New Whiteland in 1963, raising 6 children there.

Betty loved babies, the elderly, animals, anything purple, and music (1950’s rock and roll was her favorite). Within her family, her homemade biscuits and gravy are legendary.

Betty worked for many years at the Masonic Home in Franklin. While employed there, she genuinely loved the people entrusted to her care.

One of her favorite sayings was, “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.” A lesson we all should heed in this day and age.

She is survived by her children; Rhonda (Bill) Rice of Calvin, Kentucky, Claude (Barbara) Smith of Palm Bay, Florida, Susie (Patrick) Carroll of Kingsland, Georgia, Donnie (Kim) Smith of Taylorsville, Indiana, James (Cathy) Smith of Jeffersonville, Indiana and Earsel (Kelly) Smith of Shelbyville, Indiana. She also leaves to cherish her memory 12 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Schwartz Mortuary in Franklin is in charge of arrangements. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital be made in Betty’s name.
