Ronsiek scores 27, Creighton tops No. 19 DePaul women 83-72

<p>CHICAGO &mdash; Emma Ronsiek scored 27 points, Temi Carda added 18 and eight assists and Creighton became the first unraked team to beat No. 19 DePaul this year, winning 83-72 on Saturday.</p>
<p>Ronsiek was 9-for-12 shooting and Carda, one of the few players to wear a mask while playing, was 6 of 9 as the Bluejays went 29 of 50, including 8 of 15 from 3-point range For good measure they made their first 16 free throws, going 17 of 18. </p>
<p>Carly Bachelor added 13 points for Creighton (7-8, 6-5 Big East Conference), which has won three straight and beat a ranked team for the first team since winning at DePaul last season. Payton Brotzki scored 11 points and Morgan Maly 10 with nine rebounds.</p>
<p>Lexi Held and Sonya Morris scored 17 points apiece and Jorie Allen had 16 with seven rebounds for the Blue Demons (13-5, 10-3), who had their four-game winning streak end. Their other losses were to current top five teams Texas A&amp;M, Louisville and UConn twice.</p>
<p>An 8-0 run — a Brotzki layup, Dworak 3-pointer and Carda’s free throws after being fouled on an attempted 3 — gave the Bluejays a 22-16 lead in the last minute of the first quarter and they led the rest of the way. </p>
<p>The score was 42-36 at the half and reached 12 in the third quarter. After the Blue Demons closed within five with 8:32 to play, Ronsiek took charge and scoring 14 points in the last seven minutes.</p>
<p>Ronsiek, a freshman, had 28 points when the Bluejays fell in the first meeting 90-81 in December after leading 63-60 entering the fourth quarter.</p>
<p>The up-and-down Bluejays scored 77 and 42 points in their last two games, but both were one-point wins and this time they handled the DePaul pressure in the fourth quarter. They used hot-shooting and a 41-27 rebound advantage to offset 22 turnovers and held DePaul to 38% shooting.</p>
<p>Creighton plays at Marquette on Monday. DePaul is home against Marquette on Wednesday.</p>
