Disc golf tournament to aid food pantry

The disc golf tournament at Blue Heron Park on March 6 carries a far greater significance than simply recognizing winning teams and individuals.

Proceeds from the event will again go to the Interchurch Food Pantry of Johnson County, which provides food to those in need at no charge.

The event, known as “We’ll Fix It in the Spring”, has raised a total of $5,550 for the pantry, eclipsing last year’s all-time-best mark of $1,724. The tournament is set up to have 100 disc golfers taking part at an entry fee of $30 per person.

To register and/or donate, go to discgolfscene.com. Men and women of all ages are invited to participate, as there are 12 separate divisions based on age and skill level.

Registration closes March 4 at 8 p.m.

“It’s social distancing at its finest,” said Justin Maxey, one of the tournament organizers. “In the last five years, the sport has really blown up, and I think COVID-19 has really made it grow in the last year. Our goal this year is just to make as much money as possible. We always want to surprise ourselves.

“Some people donate food. Some people donate money. These tournaments are held all over the state, and we keep it local. All the money we raise goes back into the community.”

Laura Davison, one of the volunteer workers at the Interchurch Food Pantry, located in Franklin, said proceeds from the disc golf tournament help purchase items not often donated, such as milk and cereal.

“All donations we get are greatly appreciated, I can tell you that,” Davison said. “We’ve been serving right around 100 clients every day. We also do the home deliveries, too, for people who can’t get out.”
