College notebook: Werner pitches UIndy to victory

The University of Indianapolis baseball team split a doubleheader against Tusculum in Greeneville, Tennessee, with senior pitcher Reid Werner picking up the win in a 9-2 decision. The Greenwood graduate allowed five hits in eight innings of work, striking out nine with only one walk.

Greenwood

Franklin College sophomore Nick Patton ran a time of 9.19 seconds to finish fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s indoor track and field championships in Terre Haute.

Indiana wrestler Nick Willham lost his match at 197 pounds, 4-2, in the Hoosiers’ 38-3 loss at Purdue.

UIndy distance runner Brandon Albin placed eighth in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:08.06 at the Indianapolis Track & Field Classic.

Anderson men’s basketball lost both ends of a home-and-home against Hanover despite freshman forward Gavin Dowling totaling 14 points and 18 rebounds in the two games.

Forward Jeffrey Reynolds had four points, three rebounds and a steal as St. Francis handed Taylor an 83-78 loss. He also had nine points and four boards in the Cougars’ 90-74 win over Grace College in the opening round of the Crossroads League tournament.

Franklin

Franklin College runners Drew Hargis and Eli Cochrane were part of the first-place distance medley relay at the HCAC men’s indoor championships in Terre Haute. Cochrane also ran on the Grizzlies’ 4×400 relay, which finished fourth.

Bayleigh Torrance scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench for the Franklin College women’s basketball team in its 69-57 win against Manchester. The sophomore had six points and three boards a day earlier as the Grizzlies downed the Spartans, 57-32.

Freshman guard Kiki Crabtree had three points and an assist in Hanover’s 80-62 win at Anderson.

Senior Abby Sewell had 13 kills and five digs for Franklin College volleyball in a five-set win at Earlham. The Grizzlies lost the second match, 3-1, with Sewell contributing five kills and a dig.

Whiteland

Libby Baker had five points, three assists and two rebounds for Franklin College women’s hoops in a 57-32 win at Manchester. She followed by tallying three points in a 69-52 defeat of Manchester.

Center Grove

The UIndy volleyball team scored 3-0 sweeps against Drury and Maryville with Emma Jones recording 11 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Denver volleyball squad scored a pair of 3-0 decisions over Western Illinois. Senior Macy Carrabine totaled 25 digs and nine assists.

Ashley Eck had nine digs for Indiana State in a four-set loss to Loyola of Chicago. The Sycamores beat the Ramblers  in three sets a day later, and Eck finished with eight digs and an assist. Teammate Jamie Brown was credited with a block in the second match.

Duke women’s golfer Erica Shepherd helped the Blue Devils to a third-place finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Shepherd’s 3-over-par total of 71-75-73—219 placed her third individually.

Trayce Jackson-Davis produced a career-best 34 points along with nine rebounds and two blocks for Indiana men’s basketball in its 78-71 loss to Michigan State. The sophomore forward finished with 21 points and 11 boards in IU’s 74-63 loss at Rutgers.

Sophomore guard Spencer Piercefield finished with nine points, seven assists and four steals to help NAIA No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan defeat Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 117-78. He had 15 points and three assists in the Wildcats’ 74-66 victory at Taylor in the first-round of the Crossroads League tournament.

Junior guard Cassidy Hardin had five points and two rebounds for Purdue in a 76-73 women’s basketball loss at Michigan State.

UIndy catcher Will Smithey belted a double and scored a run in the team’s 9-2 victory over Tusculum in the first game of a doubleheader. He also scored a run in the nightcap.

Freshman Gabrielle Harrell took third in the mile run for UIndy at the Indianapolis Track & Field Classic, posting a time of 5:40.91. Senior Kylie Falcone was fourth in the women’s pole vault with a best of 3.53 meters.

Indian Creek

UIndy sophomore Shaelyn Biddle finished fourth in the 800-meter run at the Indianapolis Track & Field Classic. Biddle’s time was 2:26.79.

Jared DeHart had 23 points, three assists and two steals in Bethel’s 96-84 men’s basketball win at Goshen College. He had 15 points, four rebounds and six assists in a 117-104 loss to Mt. Vernon Nazarene in the first round of the Crossroads League tournament.

Franklin College guard Addie Rund had two points and two assists in a 57-32 victory over Manchester and four points and three assists in the Grizzlies’ 69-57 win against the same squad a day later.

Greenwood Christian

Anna Subris ran a time of 2:49.11 for the UIndy women’s track squad, good for 11th place in the 800 meters at the Indianapolis Track & Field Classic.
