The world lost a shining light as Carol L. Wharton passed away peacefully on March 1, 2021. She was born on July 25, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of the late Helen and Arthur Wharton. Gratitude is extended to home caregiver, Patricia Currie, and caregivers at American Village and Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care.

Carol received a Bachelor of Arts from Taylor University, Upland, and a Masters Degree in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington. She became a renowned Indiana teacher of English, Speech and Drama who enlightened the lives of her students, colleagues and friends. Many became a vital part of her family circle.

Carol’s 39 year teaching career included Lockland High School In Cincinnati, Ohio, and in Indiana at Mississenwa, Marion, Warsaw, Greencastle and Greenwood high schools. While serving for 21 years at Greenwood HS, she directed over 40 school theatre productions. She cherished every production. In addition, Carol was a speech instructor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Carol was involved in a variety of community theatre activities and directing plays for Center Stage. She was on the Advisors Division for The International Thespian Society.

Carol was a patron of the arts, especially theatre, music, and dance. She annually traveled to NYC with faculty and students to attend current Broadway productions. She was an active miniature enthusiast and co-editor of the Woodruff Place Newsletter. She traveled extensively in The East, West, and Southwestern United States. She especially enjoyed her international trips to Brazil and Austria. Carol was an avid reader and admired for her excellence in literary expression and beautiful penmanship. She was a member of Broadway United Methodist and recently attended North United Methodist Church.

Preceding Carol in passing was her brother, Arthur Y. Wharton,Jr., and his spouse, Eileen; brother, Clarence Eugene Wharton, and his spouse, Fran; aunt, Virginia Poe, and her spouse, Robert; niece, Linda Marie Collins; and nephew, Larry Wharton.

Carol is survived by her long-term partner and friend, Terri L. Everitt; brother, James Wharton; her nephew Larry’s wife April, and their adult children Doug Wharton (Molly), Mark Wharton(Colleen), and David Wharton (Elisa), and their children; her nephews: Charles Arthur Wharton (LeeAnn); Richard Allen Wharton (Kym); Robert Scott (Beverly); nieces: Theresa McElhinny (Mac); Lori Wharton; Kathryn Arlene Armbrust; cousins: Helen Jean Frazier, Nancy Mabe, Robert Poe; and many great nieces and great nephews.

A private graveside service will be held in Columbus, Ohio, with Pastor Darren Cushman Wood officiating. Rev. Gavin Meek will officiate a Celebration of Life Service, 2PM, July 10 at North United Methodist Church, 3803 North Meridian, Indianapolis, during her 84th birthday month. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Taylor University, write Theatre Program on memo line, 236 West Reade Avenue, Upland, Indiana, 46989.
