Charles Thomas Harmon , 97 of Greenwood passed away at home Thursday, March 4, 2021. He was born June 3, 1923 in Greenwood, Indiana to Earl Bryant and Velma Lottie Hammond Harmon. He graduated from Whiteland High School in Whiteland, Indiana in 1941, where he played on the basketball team.

After school he worked at the Franklin Milk and Ice Cream Company for the summer; then at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh as a fire guard for a construction company that was building Camp Atterbury in the fall of that year. Early in 1942 he went to work at Inland Container on the night shift making cardboard box inspections. Later in 1942 he became a stock boy at L S Ayers Department Store in Indianapolis.

Charles was a U S Marine (1943-1946) in World War II and served in the Pacific Theater on the islands of Tarawa, Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was part of the occupying force in Japan in November/December of 1945. He spent the Christmas of 1945 waiting to go through the Panama Canal to come home. He was mustered out January 1946 as a Corporal. Charles was part of a group of five men that formed the West Whiteland Fire Department in 1950.

Upon his return from the war he started working for Indiana Bell Telephone Company as an installer and retired in 1982 as a supervisor/instructor.

Charles was a Jack-of-all-trades and especially liked woodworking. He volunteered at the Johnson County Museum of History from 1992-2014. He was a member of the American Legion Greenwood Post 252 and a member of the Hurricane Community Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Alice Dragoo, Mary Logsdon, Helen Kissee, Nancy Ledger and Patricia Harmon; brother: Fred Harmon. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Charlene Harmon; daughter: Brenda Aldorisio; sons: Ted Harmon and Scott Harmon; grandchildren: Kelly Harmon, Kevin Harmon, Aaron Aldorisio, Josh Aldorisio and Jacqueline Harmon; great grandchildren: Gavin and Wyatt Harmon; sister Faye Hayes; brothers: Frank Harmon and Richard Harmon; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to a local VFW or charity of your choice. Funeral Services for Charles Harmon are Wednesday, March 10 at 11:00 A.M. at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory-Greenwood Chapel, with visitation on Tuesday, March 9 from 3:00-7:00 P.M. One additional hour of visitation will take place prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
