UPDATE: Victim of weekend shooting in coma, suspect uncooperative, police say

UPDATED 3 P.M. MONDAY

A Greenwood woman is in a coma at an Indianapolis hospital after a weekend shooting, police say.

Greenwood police responded about 1:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of a person shot in the 600 block of Park Drive on the city’s northeast side, before being redirected to Community Hospital South, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

The 25-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the face, and was transported to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital from Community Hospital South. She told hospital staff 22-year-old Darius Jordan Birk, who drove her to the southside hospital, shot her, according to the news release.

As of Monday afternoon, the victim had been placed in a medically induced coma due to the extent of her injuries. The bullet struck her jaw and fractured it in numerous spots. She is expected to remain in a coma for at least a week, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant police chief.

Birk was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony, and possession of a handgun without a license, a misdemeanor. He was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held without bond. He is refusing to speak to the police, Fillenwarth said.

Police recovered a gun from Birk’s car and the case remains under investigation, he said.

The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and decide what, if any, charges to file.
