Bargersville police to interview witness to Christmas Eve shooting

Police have made no arrests in the three months since a triple shooting on Christmas Eve at a Bargersville gas station.

New witness testimony is expected to strengthen evidence and potentially lead to charges in the double homicide.

The shooting was reported just after 5 a.m. Dec. 24, after a customer at the Circle K gas station near the State Road 37 and State Road 144 intersection discovered the crime scene on the northside of the parking lot.

Ethan Bell, 18, of Indianapolis, and a 17-year-old whose identity has not been released died at the scene, while Devon McHugh, 18, of Martinsville, survived a non-fatal gunshot wound.

Police initially thought McHugh was the sole witness to the shooting. They later discovered in gas station security camera footage an unidentified man was getting gas at the time of the shooting, said Jeremy Roll, spokesperson for the Bargersville Police Department.

That man has not been located by police and tips are still being sought to locate him, Roll said.

Police located another witness through an anonymous tip, Roll said. Police confirmed in initial conversations the new witness did in fact see the shooting. An interview is scheduled with that witness in the near future, he said.

Police are also awaiting the results of evidence from the Indiana State Police Laboratory, which may be crucial to the investigation. With the backlog of homicides, there is no telling when those results will be back, Roll said Wednesday.

Police previously questioned Levi Bradley Camplin, 18, of Morgan County, the main person of interest in the double homicide. But his testimony left unanswered questions, prompting a search for additional witnesses.

At this point in the investigation, Bargersville police have an idea who is responsible for the shooting. They are trying to build a stronger case before making an arrest, Roll said. The goal is to keep making incremental progress until the case is solid enough to yield a conviction, he said.

“We are going to make sure that we dot all of our I’s and cross our T’s,” Roll said. “When we turn this thing in (to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office) we want to make sure that all due process had been followed.”

Johnson County and Morgan County sheriff’s offices and a Franklin Police Department evidence technician are helping with the investigation.

Bargersville police still ask that anyone who may have information about the unidentified witness contact Bargersville detectives at 317-714-4652 or 317-557-1402.
