Hoosiers 16 and older eligible for vaccine

Hoosiers 16 and older are now eligible to sign up for a free COVID-19 vaccine.

This eligibility expansion makes the vaccine available to about 1.3 million more Hoosiers, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. This weeks, about 2 million more Hoosiers became eligible, after an expansion from 39 to 30 on Monday.

Before this expansion, individuals were already waiting about four weeks for a vaccine, according to an analysis of local appointment availability conducted Tuesday. Appointments were fully booked at all nearby clinics out to mid-April or early May.

This morning, there was an extended wait time to look at the vaccine schedule. At 8:14 a.m., the wait to schedule a vaccine was more than 20 minutes.

Vaccine appointments are expected to extend over the next several weeks to align with expected vaccine deliveries to the state, the state health department says. State officials encourage individuals who seek an earlier appointment to look at openings in surrounding counties.

Hoosiers 18 and older may schedule a vaccine ourshot.in.gov and select a location from one of more than 530 clinics around the state.

Hoosiers age 16 and 17 may only register for a vaccine site giving the Pfizer vaccine, as that company’s vaccine is the only one on the market that has been approved for use on minors. Teens should be registered for the vaccine by their parent or guardian.

Vaccines are available at 11 sites in Johnson County: Johnson Memorial Hospital, Adult and Child Health Primary Care in Franklin, Windrose Health in Edinburgh, Sam’s Club in Greenwood and all Kroger and Walmart stores in the county.

The vaccine is also available at three locations just north of County Line Road: Franciscan Health – Indianapolis, Community Hospital South and the Claybrook Commons Kroger Marketplace.

There are 16 mass vaccination clinics scheduled at Indianapolis Motor Speedway throughout April. About 6,000 Johnson & Johnson shots per day will be administered on the following days: April 13-18 and April 24-30. All appointments for the April 1-3 clinic are already full.

To register for one of the mass vaccination clinics find IMS on the vaccine dashboard map or ask for vaccines in the 46222 zip code when calling 211.

For help registering, call 211 or contact one of Indiana’s Area Agencies on Aging or AARP. All locations of the Johnson County Public Library system can also help with registration.

Meijer and Kroger locations offering the vaccine appear on the clinic map at ourshot.in.gov but individuals will be redirected to schedule through those retailers’ platforms.
