Comedy fundraiser today to boost cancer research

Organizers of a comedy fundraiser planned today at Edinburgh’s Pixy Theatre will donate all of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

The fundraiser, at 7 p.m., will cost $10. Headliners include Rob Wilfong, Dan Paswell and Ryan Shipley, comedians from Cincinnati, Bloomington and Indianapolis, respectively, said Jan Tatlock, who is helping organize the show.

“We have a team in the Relay for Life and we typically donate all the proceeds to Relay for Life,” Tatlock said. “We did a show in October and that one we made $550. We turned it in on the December Day of Caring (when) if you donate money, they double it, so we gave $1,100 that day.”

While 22% of that money goes toward administrative costs, the rest of it goes toward cancer research, providing cancer patients with rides to and from the hospital and even lodging for appointments far from home, said Katherine Toburen, senior development manager for Relay for Life of Johnson County.

The Recovery Comedy website describes Wilfong’s comedy as highlighted by high-energy antics. Paswell competed in the Bloomington Comedy Festival in 2019, which pitted him against 39 other comedians to determine the funniest person in Bloomington. Shipley has also performed at the Bloomington Comedy Festival, and the MMJ Comedy Fest in Fort Wayne.

Along with the headliners, Tatlock, her brother Dave Cross, Ryan May, Blake Champlin and Doug Arnold — a Kokomo comedian — will entertain the audience with comedy acts. May will conduct some improv games with Champlin, who will also perform some songs, Tatlock said.

All comedy acts will be family friendly, and the entry fee can be paid at the door.
