Police: Man drove stolen car with suspended license

Edinburgh police arrested an Indianapolis man for driving a stolen vehicle.

Robert Matthew Johnson, 35, was arrested on a Level 5 felony charge of possession of stolen property, and a misdemeanor charge of driving on a suspended license.

Police on Monday ran the license plate of the black car Johnson was driving, and BMV records showed the plate belonging to a red car, according to an Edinburgh Police Department report.

The vehicle identification number showed the car was stolen Jan. 26 out of Indianapolis. Johnson said he bought the car recently and didn’t have the registration, but denied claims that he stole it, saying he didn’t have the paperwork on him. He told police he did not have a valid driver’s license, and his license had been suspended, according to the report.

Johnson said he was driving the car to Kentucky from Indianapolis  to pick up his daughter, and he was in Edinburgh to borrow money at a local pet store. A police officer observed him selling catalytic converters at the pet store, the report said.

Johnson was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is being held on $4,300 bond.
